Men's Mental Health Awareness Month

by Venus Binkley

The importance of mental health is at an all time high as we move through this fast paced world that feels like never ending demands: living up to societal expectations of rigid idealisms on how men and women should behave, think, and express themselves within society and structures that have been manufactured to keep us conformed to outdated stereotypes, traditions and beliefs. This pressure of unrealistic expectations and individual barriers has been deeply integrated into the minds of most citizens — we have normalized and overlooked the effects that this has on our overall mental health.

Even though our society is on a journey of increasing self expression and integrating modern inclusivity, compassion, and encouragement to dismantle the constructs built from previous generations, we also have to take into account the inevitable challenges we each face in our personal lives and everyday experiences that also have an affect on our mental health. These include occupational stress, isolation, sexual orientation, job insecurity, relationships, family strife, children and work-life balance issues which are catalysts for creating more mental stress in our daily lives.

There are organizations and foundations built on the premise of acknowledging the importance of mental health and humans overall well being, and every June our society has collectively contributed this month for raising awareness specifically targeted to men, to show support and acknowledge the masculine ideals that discourage emotional vulnerability, which makes it difficult for men to discuss their feelings or ask for help.

There’s a persistent stigma that men should be stoic, tough, and self reliant. Showing basic emotions such as crying, stress, pain, and heartbreak is seen as weakness — causing men to suppress their emotions or project them onto others. This only causes added psychological issues, creates toxic masculinity, leads to loneliness, sometimes isolation, and prevents men from opening up, communicating and discussing their thoughts and feelings.

These harmful coping mechanisms affect millions of men across the world, some for their entire lives and are inevitably passed down to their children. This deepens the need for attention and awareness in order to have a more high functioning society and a safe space for our male citizens now to express themselves and for future generations to come.

As many struggle with mental health, there have been studies done that show that men are at the high front for getting undiagnosed for mental health disorders and reaching out for the proper help or guidance. This has led to the discovery that men not only are more likely to die from suicide than woman amongst many countries, but are even more likely to partake in risky behavior, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, violence, and anti-social behaviors.

While each individual may need specific treatment or support for their own personal behaviors, various mental health concerns or unique challenges, there are plenty of ways men can improve their mental health. Below, I have gathered my favorite strategies to start heading in a more positive direction and take action on improving my overall well being.

  • Acknowledge and Express Thoughts and Emotions

Recognizing when you are having mental health issues or partaking in negative behavior or thought patterns allows you the opportunity to accept these circumstances and take action in changing them. Suppressing these normal human experiences leads to future problems and can have many negative impacts on your well being and personal life. Acknowledgment allows individuals to see underlying issues that will help with problem solving and confronting challenges to prevent them in the future.

  • Seek Professional Help

Reaching out for help is a great way to show yourself that you are deserving of change and acknowledgment as you take charge in battling your mental health. There are many professionals out there waiting to lend a ear to help get you on the right track or guide you through the process of maintaining a healthier approach to our thoughts and feelings and overall life challenges.

  • Establishing Boundaries

As we teach ourselves to set healthy boundaries these actions empower individuals to assert their needs and preferences confidently. Healthy boundaries help protect against emotional and mental exhaustion. While reflecting respect for oneself and one's needs.

  • Limiting Substance Abuse

Limiting substance abuse often results in improved mental clarity and cognitive function. This can lead to better decision-making, increased focus, and improved memory. Limiting substance abuse allows individuals to focus on personal goals, hobbies, and interests. It promotes personal growth and self-improvement by fostering healthier habits and lifestyles.

  • Educating Yourself

Understanding mental health concepts helps individuals recognize their own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This self-awareness is crucial for personal growth, self-improvement, and managing one's mental well-being.  Education about mental health challenges stereotypes and reduces stigma surrounding mental illness. It promotes empathy, understanding, and acceptance of individuals experiencing mental health conditions.

  • Group Activities

A mentally healthy group creates a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing ideas, expressing concerns, and seeking help when needed. This openness fosters a sense of belonging and encourages participation from all members. Exploring new perspectives and engaging in new ideas can allow individuals the chance for growth and recognizing that they are not alone in their battles.

  • Setting Goals

Setting goals motivates you to take action and stay committed to achieving desired results. Goals provide a sense of purpose and drive, encouraging persistence in the face of challenges. Goals provide clarity on what you want to achieve and help you prioritize your efforts. They give direction and focus your energy toward specific outcomes, reducing distractions and indecision.

  • Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness is effective in managing and reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. It promotes emotional regulation, increases self-awareness, and fosters a non-judgmental acceptance of thoughts and feelings. Meditation cultivates emotional resilience by increasing self-awareness and promoting non-reactivity to emotions. It helps individuals observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment, leading to better management of emotional responses.

  • Speaking Positive Affirmations

Affirmations help cultivate a positive internal dialogue. By repeating positive statements about oneself, individuals can counteract negative self-talk and self-limiting beliefs. Repeating positive affirmations in the mirror or writing them down every day can allow these statements to become internalized and re-wired in the subconscious mind to help navigate a more positive mindset and align you with more experiences that are for your highest good.

  • Prioritizing Physical Health

Physical activity and exercise stimulate the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that promote feelings of well-being and happiness. These chemicals help regulate mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Regular exercise and physical activity can improve body image and self-esteem. Achieving fitness goals and feeling stronger and healthier contribute positively to self-perception and confidence.

  • Maintaining a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet supports brain health and cognitive function by providing adequate nutrients for neuronal growth, repair, and communication. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables protect brain cells from stress, which can contribute to cognitive decline.  Research suggests that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins may reduce the risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.

  • Surround Yourself with Supportive Relationships

Supportive relationships provide emotional validation, empathy, and understanding during times of stress, sadness, or uncertainty. Having someone to confide in and share feelings with can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

In summary, prioritizing men's mental health is essential for promoting overall well-being, reducing stigma, enhancing relationships, and creating a healthier society. By addressing mental health proactively and inclusively, we create environments where men feel empowered to prioritize their mental well-being and seek support when needed.
